Lollipop camera scheme to be rolled out nationwide
Hidden security cameras could be mounted in the poles of all lollipop men and women in Britain following successful trials by several local authorities, it has emerged.
By Sarah Knapton 5:08PM BST 21 Sep 2008
It comes after a number of incidents in which motorists have assaulted crossing patrol staff or ignored their demands to stop.
The cameras are activated when the pole touches the ground and are pointed at the offending car to record the number plate.
Drivers can then be pursued and punished.
Around 1,400 incidents were reported to councils last year and dozens of lollipop staff needed hospital treatment after being hit by cars.
Successful trials have already been carried out in authorities ranging from London to Yorkshire.
But officials now believe the policy should be rolled out nationwide.
David Sparks, transport spokesman for the Local Government Association, said he expected all councils would buy the £900 poles.
He added: "They are fantastic.
"They are very effective in stopping motorists and they are also highlighting the problems of renegade drivers who are no longer going to get away with it."
It is illegal to ignore a lollipop sign and drivers can face a £1,000 fine for disobeying the law and three penalty points on their licence.
Previously only a handful of cases ever went to court because it was one person's word against another.
The camera poles, costing £890, have been developed by Oxfordshire-based company Routesafe.

Plea for lollipop men and women
By David Searle
3:36pm Thursday 16th July 2009 in News
RESIDENTS are being asked to come forward and play a vital part in helping their communities by becoming a school crossing patrol officer.
About 80 lollipop men and women, as they are more commonly known as, help children and their families cross the road safely on their way to and from school each day throughout Worcestershire but in recent years, both at local and national levels, recruitment to the roles has become steadily more difficult.
There are currently three school crossing patrol officer vacancies in Redditch, at The Vaynor First School, Oak Hill First School and St Luke's First School, and Worcestershire County Council is asking people who think they might be able to do the rewarding job to get in touch.
Councillor Derek Prodger MBE, the county council's cabinet member for transport and safer environment, said: "All of the school crossing patrol officers in Worcestershire help their local communities each and every day.
“Their importance in helping keep children and their families safe should not, and cannot, be underestimated.
"I would like to encourage anyone who thinks they might be able to help fill the vacancies that currently exist to get in touch with us to find out more.”
People of all ages who can spare around a half-hour in the morning and afternoon can apply and all successful applicants receive a salary, full training and uniform.

County council’s recruitment drive for school crossing officers
By Richard Vernalls, 11:00pm Wednesday 29th July 2009 in News
MEN and women are needed to help schoolchildren cross the road safely.
Worcestershire County Council is asking for volunteers to come forward and play a vital part in helping their communities by becoming a school crossing patrol officer.
About 80 lollipop men and women help children and their families cross the road safely on their way to, and from, school each day throughout the county but in recent years, both at local and national levels, recruitment to the roles has become steadily more difficult.
There are 15 vacancies throughout the county including four in Worcester, one in Droitwich and one in Stourport-on-Severn.
People of all ages who can spare about a half-hour in the morning and afternoon can apply. All successful applicants will receive a salary, full training and a uniform.
Christine Bridgwater, school-patrol crossing superviser who was a ‘lollipop lady’ for seven years, said: “I was taking my own children to school and thought it would be beneficial to the rest of the community if I applied for the job to help other children and their parents to cross a very busy road.
“It really was satisfying, very rewarding and I enjoyed the daily interaction with the children.”
She said her current job let her see the role from “both sides”.
Derek Prodger, the county council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “All of these officers help their local communities each and every day.
“Their importance in helping keep children and their families safe should not, and cannot, be underestimated.”
There are vacancies for crossing patrol officers at the following schools in and around the Worcester area: Perdiswell Primary School, Bilford Road, Worcester.
Cranham Primary School, Tetbury Drive, Warndon, Worcester.
Cherry Orchard Primary School, Timberdine Close, Worcester.
Stanley Road Primary School, Stanley Road, Worcester.
Chawson Community Primary School, Wyche Road, Droitwich.
Lickhill Primary School, Almond Way, Stourport-on-Severn.
There are also spaces for relief school patrol officers at many schools.
For more information call Tina Green on 01905 766826 or e-mail tgreen@worcestershiregov.uk All vacancies can be viewed on the schools crossing patrol page at worcestershire.gov.uk.
